Aluminum Whittling

I've got another project on the bench - whittled out of aluminum & plastic. I have the machine tools, but I'm no machinist. If I made that claim, I could say I'm a house contractor because I have a hammer. Or a photographer, 'cause I have a camera. Wait.

Anyway, I've got a video project on the way, that needs a bunch of footage shot from a boat. A moving boat. Where there might be waves. And I don't want to make the viewer seasick.

So, this gadget is a 3-axis gyro stabilized camera mount. Based on a design I did 2 decades ago when filming from RC helicopters. (It was film back then - 35mm Eyemo with 100ft film loads)

During the calm before the storm, I rose early and got in some rowing as the sky brightened in the east.

It was an absolutely still day for an entire Saturday with gulls along the shore preening like mad.

Knowing there was a full moon due (and not wanting to endanger the family with the change) I went up to Heather Meadows to see what I might see. Ok, there's no change. I already had the beard. And, my daughter went with me.

Anyway, moonlight makes for some interesting possibilities and I wanted to play with it a little. So, I set up my camera with an interval timer and shot a couple hundred frames over 4 hours. Just to watch the stars move over the mountains. I haven't put it together into a video yet, but here's one frame out of the bunch...

My buddy, David, & I paddled down the Skagit River delta yesterday. I picked him up at 6:00 and by 7:30 we were on the water. Look at the map and you'll see the launch point at the North East end of Skagit State Wildlife Recreation Area.

We went with the river flow first. Then as we were back much too early, we paddled up river past the launch to see where the fork was. I was hearing Disney and hear was hearing banjos.

So, here's the math problem: one hour up river, and 20 minutes back. How fast is the river flowing?

We've been on the lookout for wild animals - there are signs along all the roads to be watchful for Elk, Bears, Mountain Goats, Bighorn Sheep, and Deer.

We've discovered that a gaggle of cars pulled off the side of the road is a good indicator that a wild animal was nearby.

So, far, we've only managed a picture of this little noisy fella.

Ok, here's the reality. We pulled up to the gate at Herald Provincial Park at 11:08 and learned that the gate is closed and locked at 11:00. How about that?

So, since we towed our hotel along with us, we found a quiet place off the road and slept soundly anyway.

In the back parking lot of the Salmon Arm Best Western. Right next to an RV for sale, and just through the trees from the busy railroad.

When you're tired you can sleep through anything.

My wife and I celebrated 20 years of marraige today. We've known each other half our lives now and are looking forward to more years together.

As a reader of MAKE I was excited by a particular project dreamed up by Mikal Hart called the "Reverse Geocache".

The idea is this: build a box with a latch that is only opened when the box is in a special location as determined by the on-board GPS.

Not being able to leave well enough alone, I made mine with multiple drawers - the first drawer opens easily, but the remaining drawers only open in order at different places around our home town and elsewhere.

The first contained a map and drawing compass, along with a small gift. She's managed to open the next two drawers, but we're nowhere near the final location.

I dragged the family out tonight for a paddling. We expected one more this trip, but car troubles kept him at the other end of the county.

It was a little bit cool out, which isn't easy for me to admit 'cause it was just so nice to be on the water. Ok, maybe low 40s, upper 30s does not provide the conditions necessary for warm blooded creatures to enjoy the great outdoors.

Maybe I should let them load and unload the boats, working up a sweat while they're at it. Hey, I did.

I spent another weekend in Ewing Cove in the Sucia Islands with my good buddy David. That place is a little slice of heaven for me.

I've been wanting to tell the story of our trips out there in video for a while now, but haven't been able to nail down the story. What's the story on that? Anyway, I don't just want a bunch of random scenes, I want there to be a thread that holds it all together.

David, the emerging writer (and a fine one too) talked through my difficulty with me and helped me think about it in terms of time. From that we came up with the idea of a time lapse of the tide rising, interrupted by real time video.

Here's the result of that experiment.

This Paperwhite flower, in the window, is being watched right now. I set up my 30D on a tripod with an interval timer snapping a picture every 15 minutes.

Poking around the kitchen tonight I sensed a sweetness in the air I didn't recognize as being part of the dinner was cleaning up.

We're pretty good at generating it, you & I.

The flotsam and detritus hints we drop that we've been through here too. Bits of metal & shards of wood, or scrap of cloth & paper clipping. Books we haven't read yet but mean to. Gadgets that overflow the camera bag and the tins of cookies that haven't been delivered yet.

Somehow, all by itself it seems, somehow it merges together into the evidence that you & me somehow became us.

Could some archaeologist separate it into it's component pieces? Or, has a little bit of you become me that can no longer be untangled? Would the untangling leave the two empty and no longer whole?

To the woman who married me: twist us like a pretzel, I want the untangling to be impossible.

Road trip!

I am on my way to Minnesota with my folks. Three of us shoehorned into a minivan. Well, shoehorned sounds harsh, it's actually quite comfortable. And, with a load of stuff (like sleeping bags and pillows) in the back to mask the rattles, rather enjoyable too.

News flash: in manual mode a Nikon SB-800 will work just fine on a Canon 30D.

We came here for a short get-away (wish we could bring the whole family, but someone has to take care of the animals & house) and when we awoke the first morning we're treated to fresh snowfall. A local gas station attendant said to me: "Man am I sick of this weather. Summer should be here by now."

Cranberry Lake

Awhile ago we planned a paddle around Cranberry Lake in Anacortes, and today was the day to implement the plan.

A canoe with Grandma & Grandpa, a kayak each for my brother & his sweetie and me & my sweetie.

The good news: It was a great day on the pond.

The bad: My sweetie caught cold and felt better staying home under the covers.

Sunset over bellingham bay. My youngest had some homework to attend to and thought it might be nice to get out of the house to do it. So, down to Woods Coffee in Boulevard Park for a change of study atmosphere. I tagged along with a camera & tripod for a little sunset time-lapse.

Sunrise over Addis

My last day in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

I just happened to wake as the sky was getting orange. As I headed for the west window to have a look, my roomie startled me with: "Sunrise, huh?". Yep, it is and I think I'm gonna try to capture some of it.

I just wish I'd thought to shoot more frames with less time between each one. Another learning experience...

When exploring with a camera, it's easy to forget that not watching where you are going is a recipe for a bruising. I came upon this stairway while looking off to the side of the trail. Some small tickle in the back of my neck prompted me to look where I was going.

I'll be listening to those tickles a little more carefully for a while...

A very gray day out there today, with just a smidgeon of liquid sunshine to lubricate the pathways. Not a breath of wind other than that generated by the bikes wizzing past, or the loud cell phone operators sharing their views on the world with the world.

High drama staring across the great expanse of open floor at the entryway to our house is a common occurrence. These two live an uneasy dance of one party's careful avoidance and the other's great desire to meet. Basing our assumptions on what the dog does to stuffed animals we've decided to act according to the wishes of the cat.

Still, it's fun to watch every muscle under that black coat quiver in anticipation...

Which is it?

Did somebody think about coming back to lock the bike/kayak/dog leash to this very spot at some point? Did they measure out the length of fencing and decide this was the spot?

Or, where they lost in thought about the book they'd just purchased from Village Books and snap the lock shut on their way home? Like me when I put the milk on the shelf and the cereal box in the fridge after my midnight snack?

I hope that camera operator can handle the huge contrast being dished out by the direct sunlight...

Another Day, Another Outing

Out early this morning, for a trip to collect coffee (we were out - that's not a good thing) and I took the scenic route past the lake. Something about the piling echoing the distant tree line has been hooking me for a while and I have yet to quite capture what it means.

My family has been naming inanimate objects for a long time now. Not everything gets a name however. Only certain things. And, they're not letting me in on the secret formula for what gets a name and what doesn't.

At any rate, today's named inanimate is "Millie" the machine. So named because sometimes she's a milling machine. Other times she's a lathe, but that part doesn't figure into the name.

Here, she's the unnamed alter ego...

We went out on a walk through the park with extended family the other day. Here're some found photos on the day.

The first one seemed a bit of a non-sequitur - the welcoming of Christmas lights and a sign saying "Stay Out!".

This next one a sapling catching the falling bits of the parent tree. "Don't worry mom, I got it!"

So uh, "Hi!" to my two faithful followers. I'm glad you're out there still.

It was a neat project to shoot a photo each day in 2009 and I'm glad I did it. I did miss a few days - the total doesn't quite add up to 365 sorry about that.

Now that 2009 has come to a close, I have to figure out what to do in 2010.

My lean is to work harder on Quality and let the Quantity fall where it may. With that in mind, I'll have to change some things so it's clear this is not another 365 challenge.

In any case, I don't intend to stop making pictures, just reduce the daily demand to a dull roar.

So, you get out the Legos and build a parallel parking school. Saves on gas and the paint too...
